PhD research

From December 2004 to November 2010, I worked as a PhD student and researcher at the Federated Collaborative Networks group (FCN) of the Informatics Institute (IvI) of the University of Amsterdam (UvA). The main research theme of this group represents  development of: theoretical foundations, reference models, distributed/federated databases, and information modeling and management, to support Collaborative Networks. My research & development activities at the FCN group fell within the following main areas: View figure.

Collaborative Networks (CNs)
  • Focusing on networks of organizations: Virtual Organization (VO), VOs Breeding Environment (VBE)
  • Developing information models, databases, and management tools for VBEs
  • Specifying a reference framework and a reference model for VBEs
  • Developing a methodology for instantiation and launching of VBEs in different domains
Ontologies
  • Designing and engineering a unified ontology for VBEs
  • Specifying ontology discovery and maintenance approaches
  • Specifying advanced ontology-based information management approaches
Competencies and profiles
  • Modelling competencies of network's members
  • Modelling profiles for network's members
  • Developing management approaches for competencies and profiles
Software applications to manage CNs
  • Specifying the VBE management system
  • Developing a tool for ontology management in VBEs
  • Developing a tool for competencies and profiles management
  • Implementing software tools and services using Eclipse, Java, Postgre, TomCat
Establishing a long term strategic CN for biodiversity research infrastructure
  • Based on existing networks of organizations working in the biodiversity related domains in Europe
  • Developing methodologies and tools for establishing a long term strategic CN for biodiversity domain
